Defining Technical Progression
Without clear career ladders, engineers assume the only way to advance in compensation and status is to become a manager. This is disastrous for technical excellence. You must create parallel tracks for Individual Contributors (ICs) and Management.
The Dual Track System
- Management Track: Tech Lead -> Engineering Manager -> Director -> VP. Focus on people, process, and delivery.
- IC Track: Senior -> Staff -> Principal -> Distinguished. Focus on architecture, technical mentorship, and high-leverage code.
| Level | Scope of Influence | Expectation |
|---|---|---|
| Senior Engineer (L4) | Team/Feature | Autonomously delivers complex features. |
| Staff Engineer (L5) | Multiple Teams | Solves systemic architectural issues, mentors seniors. |
| Principal (L6) | Department/Org | Sets technical vision, high business impact. |
